Just in time for Christmas (just barely) we have some of our traditional Rising Sun coffee blend. Back by popular demand, we will soon be starting to brew up single cups for our customers. Stop by and pick some up and let the coffee pick you up. Happy Holidays.

While supplies last we are continuing with our great coffee giveaway bonanza. With any purchase in the shop you will receive a free bag of Rising Sun coffee. It is the result of our latest obsession with coffee. As crafting well appointed clothing is our passion and forte we have partnered up with local experts at Jones Coffee Roasters to bring our vision to fruition.
Purist coffee marketers may rail on about the allure of single origin or even single crop coffees. In that case the roaster’s own family farm, Finca Dos Marias, in Guatemala would have been perfect and, well, easy. The mountains of San Marcos are along the Ring of Fire whose soils produce beans that are sweet and fruity. But after much experimentation and consideration our propreitor Mike Hodis decided on a blend of arabica Kenyan, Ethiopian and Indonesian beans that Jones roasts right here in Pasadena. The choice came from the need to bring forth a flavor that conveyed the Rising Sun sentiment. It is full of body yet well balanced. Having low acidity was also important to capture the quintessential Rising Sun character. When brewed correctly the winey blackberry finish is quite distinct. In our attempts we’ve learned that getting the right blend is very difficult and an art in its own right.
To fully understand what we mean we invite you to come to the shop and try a cup brewed in our Chemex coffee maker. Browse our wares and chat denim for a bit. Below is a picture of some new friends we made who tried our blend and went home with a bag each.
Even French press coffee aficionados and Bodum coffee gadget obsessives may not have heard of the elegant Chemex coffee maker. For its wonderful brew it is possibly the most underappreciated coffee maker on the market (well, at least it is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian). And at a mere 30 beans this Coffee-Geek-approved beauty is perfect for coffee lovers not ready to commit to a Kees van der Westen espresso machine.
For making Rising Sun coffee at the shop we decided to go with the Chemex for both its ease of use and the hands-on approach to producing a delicious brew. In principle all you have to do is pour 200 degrees Fahrenheit water over coffee grinds in a Chemex filter. In practice the barista needs to ensure grinds are coarse and exercise careful restraint to pour just enough hot water to saturate the grinds. Patience is then required to allow the coffee to drip into the serving vessel before continuing with the next hot water pour. This can be a maddening process for the caffeine fiend in the morning and makes the French press method seem almost automatic by comparison. We assure you it is well worth the effort. Experts describe the resulting cup to have the viscosity of wine, which is apt given the Chemex quite resembles a decanter.
As you can see from its 1943 patent the current Chemex has not deviated much from that design. Even the handy wood collar and leather tie are present.
If you would like to try a cup of Rising Sun coffee made with the Chemex manual drip method we invite you to our haberdashery in Pasadena to sip and shop. Our good friend Frank Barone gave it a whirl and may never turn back.
Can you think of a better name for a coffee brand than Rising Sun? The idea haunted us ceaselessly and we finally could not resist. Rising Sun is creating its own blend of coffee. The beans are from Pasadena’s Jones Coffee Roasters who grow some of the world’s best coffee on their own family farm in Guatemala known as Finca Dos Marias. The fifth generation estate, owned by the same family since 1870, has kept the coffee growing art and heritage strong and today produces some of the finest beans for clients such as Green Mountain Coffee. They are as obsessed about coffee as we are about denim.
Our proprietor Mike Hodis is shown here working at the roasters to get the perfect blend that captures our passion for denim and workwear.
