We’ve Been Busy…

In case you have been wondering whats been going on, we’ve been preparing for the upcoming “Inspiration” Vintage trade shows fast approaching in February. If you can make it out to either event please stop by our booth and say hey and check out our new stuff….And there is a lot of new pieces coming out. New Henley’s, New Chambray Work shirts, New Sweaters, New Jackets, New Denim, New Duck….We have some pretty great stuff coming in 2012 stay tuned. Here are a few sneak peak photos from the workshop.

From the hundreds of items that we are going to have for sale, we chose to showcase a few of them. First, we have 7 US Army Vietnam-Era Vintage Fish Tail Parkas, $45/each, a good selection of Vintage Workshirts, twill as well as chambray, $15/each, and an even larger selection of Denim & Twill Fabrics 5-10yrds bundle from $5/ bundle. Lastly, a variety of Cones of Thread in various sizes and colors, 50cent/cone… and more to come in the next few days.

A few people have asked if the sample sale is open by appointment only, but this is not the case. Our doors are open to one and all. This is the perfect time to get some of the gift buying out of the way before the holidays.

The Ranch Hand

Here at Rising Sun we crave the authentic things in life. This is why we often look to workwear of the past for inspiration. There is one iconic worker who had to take lots of abuse and still look rugged and handsome at the end of the day. The Ranch Hand.

Once again, Rising Sun’s Ranch Hand Jacket brings the this rugged charm back to life.

Since we know many of you have been waiting, we are happy to announce them finished just in time for the cold winter weather. This two pocket, pleated jacket, made from our signature brown duck is a timeless piece. We kept the details the same, using tobacco colored contrast duck on the inside of the waist band and the cuffs, and a steel buckle made from bending steel wiring as a back detail.

This piece is the Gent Waistcoat. It is crafted from the finest of wabash printed dot stripe selvage canvases. The gent features a flatbusted center back seam with inside selvage detail. The inner pocket is selvage edged with a custom Rising Sun patch. Its deep hunting pockets can subtly hold anything from your safely concealed passport to fresh quail. The chest pocket has been enlarged to perfectly fit your smart phone. This may be a vintage inspired piece but we consider your technological needs. With its plethora of features and hearty duck canvas this rusty beauty will be the pride of your wardrobe.

The Former Farmer

October has ended. Like every year, the seasons continue their slow rotation. Fall always makes me ponder the past. Two-hundred years ago our great grandparents would have spent this time enjoying fall squash and brisk clear mornings. Pumpkins dotted the fields instead of grinning from carved faces. (Fun fact: the carving of jack-o-lanterns didn’t catch on in America until the 1890′s when immigrants from Ireland introduced the custom.) And what were they wearing when carting tottering towers of ripe orange pumpkins? Why a farmer shirt of course! In the spirit of the season we have produced our own take on this classic piece.

Our Farmer Shirt continues the rugged traditions of these pre-1900′s work shirts. Made from wabash printed dot-stripe black selvage twill, it features the half placket pullover design favored by farmers of the time. With it’s bib front and secure chin strap it can stand up to the toughest abuse and protect the wearer from the harshest conditions. Gussets at the side seams feature selvedge edges, while the unique chest pockets mix the formality of welt pockets with the function of flaps. Beautiful mother of pearl fish-eye buttons add the final touch of polish. Our ancestors my not have looked this classy but that’s no reason you shouldn’t.

The Engineer Jacket

We here at Rising Sun often fondly dream of the good old days when life was simple and clothes were as rugged as the people who wore them. We are constantly striving to recapture the fleeting memories of old; to hold them close and keep them alive.

Here is a place where reanimation occurs in time for halloween.

”The patched and worn carcases of years past enter the laboratory of Mike’s mind and return to life. We wait, aching with anticipation for the joining of past and present. Blades slice through virgin fabric. Machines roar, punching through the thickest of seams, tracing lines of crimson thread in all directions. Steam billows into the sky with an angry hiss leaving all it has touched crisp and wrinkle-free. With cries of “It’s alive!” and “Don’t forget the rivets” a new piece is born”.

Summer Layer

Well the weather is getting warmer and it is time to downsize from your winter coat to something more practical for the season. We just recently finished up some indigo canvas vests and are now finishing up some of our Outdoor Vests in our classic brown duck. These are the perfect warm weather layer to stash your keys, notepad, loose change, Chapstick, sunscreen, carburetor parts, mobile devices, pheasant, quail, rabbit… you get the idea, it’s super handy for carrying things and for keeping your core warm when you need it and cool when you don’t. They look great with denim and you can dress them up with a work shirt or just wear it like me with a plain t shirt underneath. Getting Loopy

Here is a video of one of our expert tailors running a single needle stitch down what will eventually become the belt loops on a pair of our jeans. No folder or jig of any kind, just uses his finger as a guide. I wish I could have captured the long chain of denim that he stitched like this, I only got my camera out in time to catch the very end.

Duck Hunt

It’s open season at Rising Sun and the name of the game is “duck”. Just to make sure that we’re not going to offend any bird lovers, duck was the term used to describe canvas in the 1800′s and continues to be used by the people in the know. Brown Duck has been part of Rising Sun since the beginning. It is on our waistband facing and various other iconic trim details which have become our signature and finishing touch to our denim trousers and jackets. Naturally it progressed into various work wear styles such as the ‘Worker’ and the ‘Ranch Hand’ jacket and others to come.

We want to keep you, our loyal customers and fellow supporters, up to date with the goings on about the shop and our fresh, right out of the oven items produced in our Haberdashery on a daily basis. On the menu today we have our favorite fowl, Duck… Bon Appetite!

August 7th is coming up fast, and we just wanted to wet your whistle with a glimpse of our production of the mine-found recreations for “Dead Grass”.
