Rising Sun & Co. made a new friend the other day. Her name is Emily Bihl and she runs a bright-eyed and beautiful new menswear+ blog called Rye & Rivet. She took a liking to our Duck Outdoor Vest and posted a glowing recommendation and links to our catalog. The post is located here.

Well hi there. I’m the new guy. The amazing underling. The gopher. The one who does the little things with pleasure while soaking up all the knowledge I can find! I’m a summer transplant from New York who is out in Los Angeles to entrench myself in LA’s vibrant denim culture. I have but one year of study left at Cornell University as an apparel design student who focuses on menswear in general and denim in particular. Denim is the love of my life. It’s that simple.

My name is Jesse F. Ruoff and this is my post.

That’s me right there, wearing our signature Engineer jacket. There are only six left so grab one if you want one! Hey, it’s no shirt off my back…oh wait, yes, yes it is exactly that. But all of our jackets go to good homes. How can they not? They’re great jackets for great people just like, hmm…oh I don’t know, you perhaps? Yes you. No, not that guy reading your screen over your shoulder, you.

A little habit of mine is to make bracelets out of the scraps of whatever I’m working on at the moment. The leather is from a personal bag project while the indigo selvage was leftover from constructing the Engineer jackets. My whole arm would be covered if the bracelets didn’t break, get lost, or become nasty. I’ll get there eventually!

Better Knot

Well I know that we mentioned some time ago that we were going to be getting in some special one of a kind ties by Otis James. Well they are here and they are brilliant. Ottis is a bright young tie maker from Nashville that makes all of his ties himself one by one, and goes so far as to do all the hand lettering on the ties. Mike and Ottis spent about an hour working on the basic tie designs as he wanted something exclusive and new for Rising Sun. There combined efforts produced some of the finest ties you can buy.
Notice the selvage detailing running diagonally down the tie. The unique bias detailing is proprietary to Rising Sun. This detail is available on both the chambray tie and the denim tie.

Also of note is the field bag in the display case. This is a field bag made by Archival Clothing in Eugene, Or… More info on these bags to come.

Pasadena’s Rosie

When Pasadena Magazine thought up the concept to do a issue on the power women living in Pasadena they thought of Rosie the Riveter. Next they called up there resident experts on clothing from that era and asked us if we wanted to help. The idea sounded like fun, and the opportunity to meet Alison Brie… even better. We quickly sewed together a women’s chambray shirt, modeled after a vintage piece that we had, and we made one of our bandanas in a red and white version to complete the look. Both pieces turned out great and they may be something that we produce in the future. Mainly thought it was just a way for us to stay involved in the community that we love.

Building Ties

We have a new friend over here at Rising Sun by the name of Otis James. Otis is a tie maker that believes in the same artisan values that we live by. He stopped by our shop last month and we decided to do a special line of ties with him using some of our selvage chambray as well as some other fabrics we had been holding onto. We just got some images in and wanted to share them. I am very excited to be getting these ties in the shop. Otis makes all of the ties himself and goes so far as to hand paint all of the labels. These styles are exclusive to Rising Sun and will be available for sale in our shop very soon.

Back in Blue

We thought the day would never come, but we were finally able to get our hands on some more Cone Mills indigo dyed canvas. This indigo dyed selvage canvas is a great way to add more indigo to your wardrobe without succumbing to the dreaded “Canadian Tuxedo”. The first order of business was to make more of our all indigo Outdoor Vest. This item has only been made in small runs in the past and is something that we constantly get requests for. We are happy to have it in our line up once again. Below are some Pictures of Julian of Julian Boots in his 2 year old indigo canvas Outdoor Vest.

Tadd is a very talented photographer who is dedicated to capturing the spirit of American craftsmanship. Making Pants For Nigel

We were pleased to have a visit on Sunday from the master of outerwear, designer Nigel Cabourn. He was taken aback by our haberdashery and came back on Tuesday for a meeting. While exploring our workshop on his first visit, he called it “the greatest shop in the world”, admiring the craftsmanship behind each pair of jeans we make. We were flattered when he asked us if we would be interested in a collaboration Rising Sun jean for Nigel Cabourn… there will be more to come so stay tuned for updates!

Stepping Back In Time

There is an encouraging new artisan movement in Los Angeles where local products are made the old-fashioned way using the best and most authentic ingredients. Many of the craftsmen in this movement have been drawn together as a result of the common thread they share.

 One particular artisan, the boot maker – Julian. He is known amongst fellow craftsmen as someone who takes joy and pride in every step of the process from hand carving lasts to hand making every single pair of boots, right here in the America. While riding in Hodis’s pre-war hot rod as the navigator on the Annual Reliability Run, meandering through the San Gabriel Mountains, the idea of the collaborative effort was born.

We took an English last (the last makes the the shape of a boot) from the time period before the First World War. This last was the shape that was used by Welsh miners in the United Kingdom during this pre-war period. We made a couple modifications for comfort and fit and then we applied a pattern that was commonplace in that time up until about 1920.  

The boot that we created is all handmade solid leather throughout (100% leather sole and upper), crafted in the old-fashioned handmade way, the same way that it would have been done back in that time period.  

One motivation behind this project is that we see people are becoming very serious about buying local products made with old-fashioned techniques and with the highest quality of goods. We believe some of this was born out of an intrigue with vintage products because they were always made and bought locally, and with highest quality materials. It is in opposition to most of the products we buy today that have been made in the farther parts of the world.

We made only 5 pairs of these boots which will be available for boot enthusiasts to look at, try on, and purchase at our event on August 7, along with our mine-found recreations.
